The Ending of “There Will Be Blood”

I do agree with Christopher Orr that the movie “There Will Be Blood” is a flawed masterpiece. Orr warns the readers who have not watched the movie, that his review is a movie spoiler. Orr does a great job on giving his insights on the film as it told as if he had researched it for a lengthy time. He really does put out a lot of details onto the characters and the plot of the movie. Orr also puts his own intake of the movie into his review and also reveals his own expectations of the movie. He also compares the movie to other films that are “flawed masterpieces” such as the movie Magnolia. Orr also reveals some of the questions he has for the films regarding Eli, and if Daniel Plainview is really possessed.

I really found the ending of “There Will Be Blood” a bit confusing and interesting. Orr did admit that the ending was unnecessarily violent. Yes it was violent, but I do ask myself if the beating of Eli was supposed to be expected or if it was deserving. I think I have to see the movie a couple of times starting from when Plainview is succeeding in his oil business because there were some parts that I couldn’t fully understand. I had a hard time with the whole Eli situation and his deal with Daniel Plainview. The movie itself I thought was great and it was actually more intriguing than I thought it would it be.

The most questioning part to me was the very end. It seemed that Daniel Plainview had just gone crazy and looked the most ruthless and cruel when he had that conversation with his son. But it was puzzling to me what had happened to him when he was just sitting there after he had beaten Eli to death. What actually happened to him and his oil business? Was he still crazy? If these questions were answered though, who knows what that would have done with the movie as a whole. Maybe it was better to leave to ending off with the viewers.
