I’m really struggling on finding a subject to write about so I’m deciding just to write about what I am going to write about in my next paper. At first I was one-hundred percent sure that I was going to do a film. I thinking about for a second, I realize that’s really going to be hard especially after reading the ones in class. It just seems that anything I write about will compare to the ones they wrote. I’ve made a list between 3 movies to write a critical review on: Ice Age, Leon: The Professional, and Crash. Leon: The Professional is actually my favorite movie so I automatically put that on my list. The other ones I put on there just because it seems like an easy film to do a critical review on. They are not necessarily my favorite (although I have to admit Ice Age was on of the best animated films I’ve ever seen) but writing a critical review on them is do-able. I don’t think that many have seen Leon: The Professional, but it really is a classic. Even my sister, who absolutely loathes movies with guns, shootings, and drugs, or anything that is mob-like loves this movie and actually put it in her favorite movie list. And to say, a youthful Natalie Portman does a pretty good job with her role in the movie. To people who have not seen the movie and wants some kind of background on it, it is about a little girl (Natalie Portman) living with an Italian hit-man named Leon after her mother, father, two sisters, and little brother get murdered by a cop (the bad kind of cop). Well the cop realizes that he had not killed the whole family, so he goes on this internal rampage trying to find this girl. While living with the Italian hit-man, they become very close together and she actually has a secret crush on her. Well, the cop finds her with the Leon, and I am going to leave it up to you to see the movie. It’s a great film, trust me. Ice Age is obviously a great movie if you have not seen it already. The sloth has a hardcore lisp which makes the movie ten times funnier and the way he walks is too funny. I usually am not really into animated films, but this movie is a definitely a classic in the animated world. Crash is a movie that would be somewhat easier to do a review on since it is about race and different stereotypes in the world today. It’s a good movie, but it is a movie you can not watch more than once. I have my decision on writing my review on Leon: The Professional, but I am not 100 percent sure I am bought on it though. Help me please!!

Discrimination Towards Dogs

April 21, 2008

Discrimination is not only going on with human beings today. Dogs are also being discriminated by the color of their fur lately. In this article about discrimination, big, black dogs are said to be the last ones to be adopted from animal shelters. One veterinarian knew that the dogs stay the longest at the animal shelters were older dogs, abused dogs, sick, or injured dogs. But she also notices that black dogs were very difficult to send them to another family. They call it “Black Dog Syndrome” since they see it is harder to adopt dogs with black coats. Even after a year had passed, one of the nicest dogs in the shelter, which was black coated, no one had noticed her. It is a bit unusual since many people do believe including myself that black furred dogs are beautiful and seem unique. It took the staff to get the word out about this dog until everyone fell in love with her. But some black dogs are not as lucky. Black furred dogs are still the hardest dogs to adopt. There in the shelter the longest and no one really knows why. Staff members believe it may be some superstition thing, sort of like black cats, in which too are in the animal shelters the longest. Another theory is that black dogs just don’t catch the eyes of many. They seem to look older even when they are puppies and they get facial hair that turn out white or gray. It is also said that when people come into the shelters and see a row of black coated dogs, they think that they are not adopted for a reason, so they believe there is something wrong with them. Volunteers try to put extra energy in getting the black dogs noticed. They put brightly-colored blankets and place the dogs in very noticeable kennels. It just seems a little bit unfortunate that the black furred dogs aren’t getting enough attention like the golden retriever or some other dog.

Plastic Means Fake

April 21, 2008

Plastic surgery is taking a different direction just recently. In the Beverly Hills, where plastic surgery is so common, there are some uncommon plastic surgery requests. David Alessi, a plastic surgeon in the Beverly Hills area, has gotten quite a few unusual requests. Strangely, he has been asked to do forehead implants, ankle lipo, and a reshape in the jaw for a bigger smile. But the oddest one of them all was when a 25 year old female who said that she wanted her belly button removed. Huh? Yes, the belly button. Think about it for a second. Just think about if you see a girl in her bathing suit at the beach but has no belly button. How perplexed would you be? Well, in the past couple of years, more and more young women are experiencing with their body parts. Some want their toes shortened, padded butts so it’ll look bigger, and smaller labia. Although these fashion surgeries aren’t as common as a nose job or breast implants, its oddly enough getting more popular. Plastic surgery is getting to be more common these days, that one doctor says that young patients think about getting surgery like they’d think about getting their hair done. They always think they have to get more than one plastic surgery to be more attractive. With plastic surgery, comes some dangerous risks. One patient had a butt lift and ended up getting serious infections and lumps in her butt cheek. She had to have a large chunk of right butt cheek removed which ended up looking worse then it had before. Um? Females? It’s something called the gym, like this article says. It’s not that hard to get out of your bed with cheesy puffs stains all over your shirt and to put on some work-out clothes and do some squats or something instead of wasting money and getting plastic surgery. It’s the same with males. I’ve watched this episode on MTV called True Life, and this guy wanted calf implants. Haha. I just laughed at how pathetic a decision that was. He’s to lazy to run or do workouts involving the calf muscles. Personally, I feel that plastic surgery is a complete waste of money. You should feel good about yourself. One of my friends from high school got plastic surgery and I always noticed that she was insecure about herself. But then again, it could be a huge confidence booster. I guess I will never know since I will never get a nose job or breast implants or any type of plastic surgery.

Prom Night Number 1

April 15, 2008

The movie about the prom turning into a murder scene topped the box office this week. How disappointing is that? A movie about a teen terrorized by a psycho killer on prom night is just corny. Don’t get me wrong. Prom is great. I had a great time at my prom last year. But the plot is just a tad bit stupid. Maybe it’s because that there aren’t many movies right now that HAVE to be seen. It’s been awhile since a great movie came out. I mean, think about it. When is the last time you saw a great film? Not including the ones on TV. Ones that are out in the theaters. It’s pretty obvious without even looking at the previews or commercials that the no good movies are out. The only movie that I would maybe like to see that is closest to the movie “Prom Night” on the charts, is “Street Kings” and that’s if you force me too watch it. It’s just disappointing that I can’t go to the theater on a boring night because there is nothing interesting to view. “Prom Night” just sounds like one those movies that resemble “Wolf Creek” or “Scream”. It’s supposed to be a horror movie, but can the movie actually resemble the genre. “Prom Night” by the way is only PG-13. That means less blood, and overall, a not-so scary feeling you get compared to a rated R horror movie. If you seen “Prom Night” and thought it was good, ask yourself if it deserves to be number one in the box office.

The Unpredictable Weather in New York

April 14, 2008

Finally, New York is starting to warm up a bit. It’s not as warm as I would like it to be, but atleast the warmness is starting to sneak into the air a bit. See when I went home for spring break all the way back in February, the temperature outside was nice enough for me to where a sleeveless shirt and shorts. That was all the way back in February. Then when I go back to Virginia again for Easter, it was hot enough to go take a nice stroll on the beach. I would say it was around the 70’s that whole weekend. I think New York has reached a high of 70 once since last summer. It’s probably because it is my first year in New York that I have never been so frustrated with the cold weather. It is really hard to adjust too when you come a state where recently the coldest it has gotten is about 30 degrees, which was near Christmas. I learned that that is nothing in New York. You could call me obsessed with the weather these days since I constantly look at the weather channel to see when it’s going to STAY warm. I even look at the monthly forecasts as that predicts the future weather to come. It’s just really annoying that one day it will be a nice day outside, and then the next will be miserable, cold, and raining. It is so much easier to get sick that way which upsets me a bit. I mean I’ll come to school with a stuffy nose one day, and the next day I’ll be rubbing my eyes out from allergies. Either just stay cold, or just stay warm. Stop switching around so I could finally put away all my winter sweaters and jackets, and finally put up my spring clothes. I don’t think I have ever looked forward for the humidity and getting a tan. Even when I went back to Virginia, my friends said that I needed a tan, which sounded a bit unusual. I think it is time for the permanent warmness to settle in New York. For your interest, you can find the daily forecasts at the weather channel website.

The Ending of “There Will Be Blood”

April 13, 2008

I do agree with Christopher Orr that the movie “There Will Be Blood” is a flawed masterpiece. Orr warns the readers who have not watched the movie, that his review is a movie spoiler. Orr does a great job on giving his insights on the film as it told as if he had researched it for a lengthy time. He really does put out a lot of details onto the characters and the plot of the movie. Orr also puts his own intake of the movie into his review and also reveals his own expectations of the movie. He also compares the movie to other films that are “flawed masterpieces” such as the movie Magnolia. Orr also reveals some of the questions he has for the films regarding Eli, and if Daniel Plainview is really possessed.

I really found the ending of “There Will Be Blood” a bit confusing and interesting. Orr did admit that the ending was unnecessarily violent. Yes it was violent, but I do ask myself if the beating of Eli was supposed to be expected or if it was deserving. I think I have to see the movie a couple of times starting from when Plainview is succeeding in his oil business because there were some parts that I couldn’t fully understand. I had a hard time with the whole Eli situation and his deal with Daniel Plainview. The movie itself I thought was great and it was actually more intriguing than I thought it would it be.

The most questioning part to me was the very end. It seemed that Daniel Plainview had just gone crazy and looked the most ruthless and cruel when he had that conversation with his son. But it was puzzling to me what had happened to him when he was just sitting there after he had beaten Eli to death. What actually happened to him and his oil business? Was he still crazy? If these questions were answered though, who knows what that would have done with the movie as a whole. Maybe it was better to leave to ending off with the viewers.

Movie Reviews

April 10, 2008

In Orr’s review of “There Will Be Blood”, it gives a more detailed overview of the whole movie. It critiques the movie to give details that maybe the reader didn’t catch in the movie or details they will be familiar with while watching the movie. With Orr’s interview, I really learned and felt a different view about the movie. Without fully watching “There Will Be Blood”, I have gotten a good sense now on what I have watched and what I will be watching in the future. This review has done a good job in my terms on giving the overview of the movie in detail.

In Scott’s review of “Good Night, Good Luck”, I really understood the meaning of the movie itself. I read the review before watching the movie; I really wasn’t interested at all. But reading the review after the movie, I really grasped the whole point of the movie. It gave a lot more personality to the movie and I caught the important points and theme to the missed detail I missed while watching the movie.

I think that both of the reviews were well-written. I think that Scott did a better job of getting the real meaning of the movie, while Orr did his work with comparing his movie to another, which made it easy to read and understand. Both of the writers really were accurate with the true meaning of the films. If I had to write a review on both of these movies, I would find it very complicated to copy their reviews. They did a great job on giving their insights on the films. Their work really can help me in my future review on a particular movie.
